New Guidance from UIL Deputy Director Jamey Harrison, EdD regarding return to play after Covid-19 infection

As schools continue to navigate challenges presented by COVID-19, UIL is providing the following information.

Following a called meeting of the UIL Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), UIL has altered the return to play requirements for students diagnosed with COVID-19 related to requiring clearance from a physician or physician-approved delegate. The UIL MAC strongly recommends a student who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 receive clearance from a physician, or physician-approved delegate, prior to returning to participation in UIL marching band or athletics activities in accordance with the most current resources available from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and/or the American College of Cardiology (ACC). This change also provides medical providers with additional guidance related to when a student who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 requires clearance from a physician, or physician-approved delegate.

Additionally, UIL is reminding schools of the available exception to the school week limitation for varsity district contests rescheduled due to COVID-19. The following has been posted on the UIL website for some time and remains in effect:

The COVID-19 Pandemic has been identified as a ‘public disaster’ by the State of Texas. As long as we remain under this status as ordered by Governor Abbott, UIL varsity district contests postponed because of COVID-19 reasons may be rescheduled and played as exceptions to the school week limit as noted in state regulations, as long as they are rescheduled and played on a date agreed upon by the two schools involved in the contest, or on a date as determined by the District Executive Committee, if the two schools cannot agree.
